Bumblebee nest

A bumblebee nest is put in place in early spring. A south-facing, shady and sheltered spot such as under a dense shrub or hedgerow is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight. The box should be raised off the ground on a stable foundation of stones or bricks.

The nest box should be covered but with dry grass and dead stems from last year's perennials. However, the entrance hole should have easy access. A permanent landmark such as a light-coloured stone in front of the entrance will aid navigation as bees return home from foraging trips.

Like all wildlife, there are no guarantees that bumblebees will take up residence but the success rate is high and you could always catch a queen and introduce her.
